Water Dreaming Puyurru | Smoke by Lynette Nangala Singleton
The Story of Water Dreaming Puyurru
The site depicted in the artwork is Puyurru, located west of Yuendumu. This artwork visually narrates the profound connection to land and water, particularly highlighting the natural wells or water soakages found within its typically dry creek beds.
The narrative unfolds with two Jangala men, revered rainmakers, who initiated a colossal storm. This powerful storm traversed the country, marked by striking lightning, eventually merging with another storm system. Its journey continued westward, culminating at Purlungyanu, where it released its immense deluge, creating a giant soakage.
A pivotal moment at Puyurru involves a bird unearthing a giant snake, ‘warnayarra’. This snake then played a crucial role by carrying water to form the area's large lake, further emphasizing the vital relationship between the land, water, and events that shaped the landscape.
Lynette Nangala Singleton's artwork frequently features the Ngapa Jukurrpa (Water Dreaming) – Puyurru, powerfully illustrating the vital role of water and its flow across the landscape. She employs traditional iconography, using curved and straight lines to depict floodwaters ("ngawarra"), short dashes for cumulus and stratocumulus clouds ("mangkurdu"), and small circles for soakages ("mulju") and riverbeds. Her paintings are celebrated for their vibrant colors and meticulous compositions.
