A guide to choosing the best size rug for your room

It can be tricky deciding which size rug you need for a room, here is a guide to help you decipher which size will work best for your home.

From an interior design point of view a rug should connect the furniture in the room. Having the furniture sit on the rug will creates a sense of balance and make the proportions of the room feel bigger.

Generally, sizing up will almost always make a room feel more considered and premium.

Dining Room

For a Dining Room, ideally the size should allow for the chairs to remain on the rug even when they are occupied and pulled out.

To do this allow approximately 60-70cm wider than the edge of the table.

  • 2.00m x 3.00m rug will suit a 4-6 seat dining table. Allows for chairs to remain on rug when occupied.

  • 2.50m x 3.50m rug will suit a 6-8 seat dining table. Allows for chairs to remain on rug when occupied.

  • 3.00m x 4.00m rug will suit a 8-10 seat dining table. Allows for chairs to remain on rug when occupied.

Living Room

For a living room dimensions of the room and size of the furniture are the biggest considerations.

The size of the rug should at least allow for a sofa and any armchairs to have the front legs over the edge of, and the coffee table fully on, the rug. To achieve a more luxurious look, or for open plan living areas, choose a larger rug which allows for all furniture to be fully on the rug which works to create a unified space.

As a rule of thumb:

  • 2.00m x 3.00m rug would suit a compact living room or apartment with a 2-seater sofa and coffee table.

  • 2.50m x 3.50m rug would suit a living room with 3-seater sofa with 2 armchairs. This size rug should extend 30-40cm either side of a 3-seater sofa.

  • 3.00m x 4.00m rug is best suited for much larger and open plan living spaces and allows for all furniture to sit fully on the rug.

Bedroom

The size of the bed and the overall look you would like to achieve are the most important factors to consider for a bedroom.


For a Queen bed:

  • 2.00m x 3.00m rug will sit under the lower two-thirds of the bed extending either side, and bed side table remain off the rug.

  • 2.50m x 3.50m rug will frame the bed more generously and bed side tables can partially sit on the rug.


For a King bed:

  • 2.50m x 3.50m rug will sit under the lower portion of the rug with comfort underfoot.

  • 3.00m x 4.00m rug will create a more balanced, luxurious, hotel-style appearance. Bedside tables may also sit on the rug.
