The Story of Water Dreaming Mikanji

The artwork is connected to Mikanji, a watercourse that's typically dry, yet holds essential 'mulju' (soakages) within its creek bed. The narrative tells of two old, blind women of the Nampijinpa who sat by these soakages. As a rainstorm began to gather, their straining eyes welled with tears, which are said to have created the rain itself. Their spirits endure at Mikanji, embodied by two 'ngapiri' (river red gums). The story is frequently depicted using motifs such as concentric circles for the 'mulju' and short bars representing 'mangkurdu' (cumulus and stratocumulus clouds).

Angelina Nampijinpa Tasman is a highly regarded artist from Yuendumu, Northern Territory, Australia. Her contemporary Indigenous art is celebrated for its powerful depiction of Ngapa Jukurrpa (Water Dreaming) stories, central to her ancestral heritage. Tasman's paintings vividly illustrate the critical importance of water sources and their dynamic movement across the arid Australian landscape. Utilizing traditional iconography, her intricate artworks offer deep insights into the enduring connection between people and the land.
