Seed Dreaming | Canvas by Evelyn Nampijinpa Daniels

The Story of Seed Dreaming

This painting recounts the story of a Jangala 'watiya-warnu' (Acacia tenuissima) ancestor. As he journeyed, he gathered the 'watiyawarnu' seeds, placing them into "parrajas" (food carriers). The 'watiyawarnu' is a seed-bearing tree thriving in open spinifex or mulga country. Upon returning to their camp after collecting the seeds, people would construct large windbreaks for shelter. The seeds are traditionally ground into a paste, which serves as a remedy for upset stomachs.

Evelyn Nampijinpa Daniels, an esteemed artist from Yuendumu, masterfully translates the rich narratives of her Warlpiri heritage onto canvas. Her art is a powerful expression of Jukurrpa (Dreaming), notably encompassing ancestral stories such as Seed Dreaming. Daniels' work is characterized by its dynamic compositions, where vibrant hues and precise patterning convey the profound spiritual connection to her country and preserve vital cultural knowledge for future generations.
