Description

“In approaching the rug design I reflected upon the many rugs we have used in our projects over the years all the good things we liked about them, as well as the purpose they served when they were set in the overall furniture placement.

It was out of these many reflections that I some key things did emerge:

Though static, a modern rug should evoke a sense of movement. A sense of directionality and life. The pattern or design should appear as if it was frozen mid-way between changing forms or direction;

Abstract rugs run aplenty and definitely work well for the modern context, but for something to be specific to a space the rug had to have more sense of definition. I felt it needed more certainty in what it could represent;

The rug should be rectangular because it would generally still fit well in multiple settings. I hoped that the rug would be something that could be readily implemented in some of our work;

Yet I hoped to break the shape of the rectangular form as well, and I was fascinated with how the Chinese paper fan created the kind of sense of movement and though the fold lines were all perfectly straight. Together they created an arc that evoked a sense of elegance;

It was through these experimentations and looking at how the simple origami-ish paper fan has inspired other applications from art to runway shows that the design of the rug came about;

I hoped that the design of the rug would be generic enough to be applied in many different contexts and yet not so exclusive.”
